Kakure Judo Club's Ashi Kubi Hishigi - Ankle Crush

This ankle lock is done when your opponent is transitioning from guard (you are in his guard) to either try to take your back or to swing a leg over for a Juji Gatame arm lock attempt.

Assuming they are moving out of guard to your right side, the typical movements of your opponent would be similar to the following:

- The opponent would post their right foot up onto your left knee or thigh

- Duck under your right arm so that both your arms are on the same side of their body

- Push with the posted right foot and swing their left leg over and across your back to either take your back or attempt an arm lock

As the opponent is attempting the last step above, you can catch them with an ankle lock by doing the following:

- Intercept their left leg as it comes across your back by moving your left arm in a vertical circle towards your left hip and then up by your head, hooking the opponent's leg leg along the way and pulling it so that it drapes across your shoulders.

- Collapse your weight to your right, trapping the opponent's posted right leg under your body

- Adjust the position of your left hand so that the wrist is over top of the opponent's foot, near the toes and then clasp your hands together.

- Pull strongly downwards on the foot, towards the opponent's own knee, with your hands while keeping your weight firmly on the opponent's other leg. The downward pull will place a strong torque on the ankle produce a submission.

This version of Ashi Kubi Hishigi ankle lock gives you a reasonable chance of salvaging an otherwise dangerous and deteriorating situation!
